OM's and Mandolas

Just a few thoughts on the use of these instruments lately (past 30 years)...
The Irish Bouzouki revolutionised modern trad in the early 70's. Planxty roared onto the Irish scene and uileann pipes became commonplace in trendy sessions. The Bouzouki was used for trad tune backing by exponents like Donal Lunney - with some melodic counterpoint thrown in. Johnny Moynihan used it to fill pauses in his singing with melodic riffs and harmonies. Andy Irvine did the same but since he also liked to play the dance tunes at speed sought a shorter scale instrument but not as high pitched as a mandolin... He settled on a Waldzither - 19"scale, tuned FCCGGDDAA - sometimes restrung without the single F - and either capo'd or retuned to suit his vocal characteristics.
Meanwhile, across the pond, the Irish zouk had caught on but players like Tim O'Brien had sought a shorter scale more vocal-friendly variation - the Octave Mandolin - Tim has a superb Giacomel OM. But to play the jigs and reels at dance tempo the OM scale of between 20" and 22" is a bit of a stretch, so the Mandola/Waldzither still held sway in ITM. On the BG side, and probably influenced by Tim O'Brien, Sarah Jarosz and Sharon Gilchrist got into short scale OM's to back their vocals and the guitar-bodied OM caught on. More and more luthiers started producing longer-scaled Mandolas - at 17" and 18" scale lengths. These gave an even more manageable scale-length for the ITM dance tunes - Andy was capoing his Waldzither to reduce the stretches - and depending on their vocal key preferences these instruments were tuned - or capo'd - anywhere from GGDDAAEE (OM tuning) to CCGGDDAA (standard Mandola) to DDAAEEBB (Baritone Mandola or standard mandola capo'd 2).
16" Scale Mandolas don't seem as popular in BG or ITM, being seen more in Classical ensembles, but they are in evidence on a variety of performer's recordings. Marla Fibish is often seen switching between her Teens Gibson mandolin and her Gibson H1 Mandola (16" scale length)...

These are just my observations, I'm sure there's a whole lot more going on than I'm aware of.

The Loar Cittern strung for first time

The conversion of the 2014 The Loar LH-300 arch top guitar to a cittern is done except for some final set up work on the nut and bridge and an adjustment on the conversion of the trapeze tail piece from taking 6 strings to 10 strings.

Here are a few rough pics. There is an earlier thread with the build pics in it.

The strings shown in these pics are just some old mandocello & guitar strings that I had laying around but they are close to my final string sizes. The strings in these pics are 0.070"; 0.048"; 0.034"; 0.022"; and 0.013") and are tuned CGDAE. I will use these strings to take all the punishment of tuning and de-tuning that will happen making the final set up adjustments on the nut, bridge and tailpiece.

I am pleased to report that the instrument sounds totally awesome but needs a lot of set up yet. The bottoms of the strings are too far off the fret board at the nut -- e.g., the E strings need to lower from about 0.075" to something more like 0.050" - similar with other strings.

It is a little tricky to play this instrument at first because the inter-course spacings are slightly different from a mandocello (the intra-course spacings are the same as a mandocello and there is no noticeable buzzing so far). Overall for this citten the string arrangements came out almost exactly as I had hoped for.

I can play tunes on the cittern using the same fingerings and chord formations as on a mandolin! :)

As mentioned some tune up work like the compensation on at the bridge is required. Likewise, I need to re-engineer the way I converted the arch top guitar trapeze to a cittern trapeze. Nothing major just some shorter brass screws.

Sorry lots of sun today and I had some glare in the pics.

Rank amateur on this awesome instrument. Have had it a couple months. Play it everyday. A little tune I made up and recorded on a little Zoom thru a K&K Definity p/u.
Hope Mike Marshall is not watching. Interested in any comments.

Favorite OM Chord Shapes

Greetings. I purchased John McGann's book on playing OM and bouzouki and it seems like it will be very helpful (I will certainly be working through it), however, in the meantime, I was wondering if any of you more seasoned players would care to share what you find to be your favorite chord shapes when playing OM?

I tune GDAE.

Love the sound of the open G (0-0-2-3) and C (0-2-3-0) and seem to have good results with the shapes D (2-4-5-X) as well as A (2-2-4-5). Last night I also discovered G (4-5-5-3 or X).

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Some of you might remember a while back that the Abnett bouzouki belonging to Mick Broderick of Slide went up for sale on eBay and was bought by a member. This short video is about the luthier who made Mick's new bouzouki, Frank Tate. He's listed among the builders from Ireland here as well. Enjoy!

LR Baggs Lyric in an OM – Video Sample

Hi,

When the highlander in my Tobin died I replaced it with a Baggs Lyric (I use Lyric and Anthems in my guitars), I couldn't find any evidence online of anyone else using one in a CBOM but thought I'd go for it anyway.

It's working out nicely, here's a vid from a recent gig using it. The mic pointed roughly at the OM wasn't in use and the sound system was a fairly modest behringer one.

Bouzouki leg support

hi all, i was at an Andy Irvine gig lastnite and he had a plastic leg support attatched to the underside of the zouks and mandola. it seemed to fold flat when not in use. any idea what it is and where can i get one for my zouk? getting a bit tired holding the zouk up at the same time as playing and the strap bugs the hell outta me! ps the gig (acoustic) was f*****g amazing!

Cittern tuned GDADG - recordings?

After being in the market for an inexpensive octave mando, I lucked into an unexpected ebay buy-it-now deal on a cittern (a Kennaquhair by Douglas Dieter of Indiana) and I'm loving it. I've tried a variety of tunings, and for now, I've settled on GDADG as one that matches my instincts and my ear. I know there are a few clips of tunes in this tuning on You Tube, but I'm looking for more recordings of players who use this tuning, especially in a group setting. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Joanna

Why did you start playing a cbom?

A question that has been floating around in my head. Judging by this site, there are alot of zouk, mandola and cittern players out there. What made you guys pick one up and decide that was what you wanted to play? For me, it was the first time i saw Andy Irvine in Dublin. I had no idea what a zouk was but went out and bought one the next week. Now i couldnt imagine not having one. Although I have been almost 2 weeks now having sold my Ozark and waiting on my Buchanan! Anyways, stories/comments welcome. And what do you play????

Mandola Fingerstyle?

I just bought a mandola and find it quite difficult to play after 10 years of mandolin (which is very comfortable for me). It's not the fretting, but the picking. All my picked notes sound so muffled and murky compared with the cleanness of my mandolin. When I use just my fingers instead, I can hear the strings much louder and clearer, even if there's a tinge of ukulele to the sound. Any hints/tips on properly picking mandola?

BTW, mandola is a Woodley H1 replica with J72 strings. It had Jazzdola strings on it from the previous owner but I found them unbalanced sounding.

Anyone play a bandurria?

Some say the bandurria is in the cittern family going back to the 1400s, so I guess it's OK to post here.

My real question is can anyone tell me the pros/cons of tuning in 4ths (bandurria) vs 5ths (mandolin)? Fret spacing appears to be essentially the same.

Thanks

I've hadn't gotten this one out for ages. I put new strings on it and remembered how much fun it is to play. It was made by James Jones in 1988. John McCutcheon endorses him, but you don't see many around. 22" scale, so pretty easy to play. The tailpiece and tuners are cheap, so I might replace them. It's a pretty thing, though. If you play an instrument that you haven't gotten out for years it's almost like buying a new one.

bouzouki string height

hey guys, been doing a bit on the new zouk, however the strings are so high im getting welts after only 2 days. question, how high should the strings be on the 665mm scale? at the moment it is about 5 or 6 mm at the 12th fret which is way too high i know. does it need a truss rod adjustment? the neck is quite bowed downwards

What new music are you learning on your CBOM?

Having deserted guitar, and recently come to mandocello - I am trying to learn some jazz standards and pop tunes. This week - I am working on Johnny A's jazz arrangement of "Walk, Don't Run". The chords require some agility, but the melody was figured out in five minutes.

Next up will be the old Isley Brothers hit "Your Old Lady", and then "Movement in the Light" by Fishbone.
