Inferiority complex

Anybody feel like their playing skill doesnt deserve a hand made instrument? Im a fairly mediocre zouk player, and i had a crisis of conscience lastnight in a dream. Basically, do we feel having a luthier instrument will improve our playing!?

Sense of accomp;ishment on mandocello

Just sittin' around last night trying to get some different tunes ready for a weekend jam. The last one I attended was pretty much, free-style ( play anything, we will follow). The mandocello was appreciated and got to try a lot of stuff, other than bluegrass. The Eagles song, "After The Thrill Is Gone" entered my zone and in a short time worked it out. A little faster than original and what I call a rolling feel on the 'cello. A whole new sound . Eagle's tunes are far from bg. I am quite happy with the results and even rec'd a compliment from my wife on it! The mc has helped me open up things I never bothered to learn, musically. It is one of the best musical purchases I ever made! Not suited for everything , but can be used in a lot of genres, if people can open up to "different". Can't wait to try this one out ! I'd pat myself on the back, if I could reach it ! P.S. Seems the mc crew are on hiatus here. Where's the team spirit ?

Eamon Dorley playing with Julie Fowlis

I have been trying to find some decent youtube videos of a Joe Foley bouzouki.

I came across Julie Fowlis with Eamon Dorley whoc plays a Foley bouzouki. He has a nice deft touch and I really dig the Hebridean upbeat music.

Here is another one of her famous songs. Eamon plays a nice intro.

And here is one with just Eamon accompanying her:

I really like his simple accompaniment. It really brings out the Irish Bouzouki sound. Love the sound of the Foley bouzouki.

Nylon string suggestions for single course liuto cantibile

$

As part of my hobby of experimenting with building somewhat unusual, some would say weird, instruments, I'm currently and slowly building a round-bodied, five string, 24.5 inch scale instrument in the mandocello + octave mandolin range, i.e. CGDAE, so I guess it would be a single-course liuto cantabile, which is far too much of a mouthful so I'm thinking of calling it a Rondocello...
Anyway, I first got the idea from loving the sound of the Cello Banjo as played by Marcy Maxter and then thought it would be handy to add the E string on top.
As for string ideas, I'm struggling as I have no experience of nylon-strung instruments.
One idea is to buy the Gold Tone cello banjo set http://www.goldtone.com/products/det...-banjo-strings and then add a suitable nylon E string. If so, could anyone suggest a suitable string to complement the Gold Tone set?
However, I worry a bit that the GT set is designed for a plastic head on a banjo, so I'd be open for any other high-tension nylon stings that would be suitable for my cedar-topped instrument.
Many thanks in advance and I'll try to post a few pictures as the build advances.
Cheers,
Dean

OM String Help

I would appreciate some help with picking OM strings. I have a Weber Yellowstone f-hole A-shaped OM with a 20" scale (short scale). I recently asked my luthier to fix the neck and provide the lowest reasonable action. He did a great job, and then reminded me that he thinks I need to use different strings, particularly G strings.

I've been using D'Addario Octave Mandolin Phosphor Bronze, J80 strings, and put a new set on a few weeks ago. That means I'm using .012-.046" strings.

I looked online to see the OM strings that are available:

  • D'Addario J80 and EJ80 (They are the same size and I'm struggling to understand the difference between them);
  • Curt Mangan Octave Mandolin Phosphor Bronze, 90837 - 12 -44;
  • Thomastik-Infeld Octave Mandolin (European Mandola) Flat Wound 45 cm Weich, .015 - .049, 174W, Thomastik-Infeld Octave Mandolin (European Mandola) Flat Wound 45 cm Mittel, .015 - .049, 174M, Thomastik-Infeld Octave Mandolin (European Mandola) Flat Wound 45 cm Stark, .020 - .063, 174S, all of which seem to be too short;
  • GHS Octave Mandolin (8 String Set) Phosphor Bronze Regular, .012 - .044, PF285;
  • John Pearse Mandola/Octave Mandolin Phosphor Bronze 36" Length, .012 - .045, 2280.

I can't find much information about these strings online, so I'd appreciate people sharing their experiences and recommendations.

Thank you!!!

Seeking case for Gold Tone OM-800

Picked up a used Octave Mandolin from a store for a good price, however they didn't have a case available.

Any recommendations for where I might be able to find a case for one of these? Also, I think I'd benefit from getting a strap. Any recommendations in that regard?

Last August I asked a luthier friend of mine if he'd consider building me an octave mandolin after some thought he agreed.

Over the last few months he built three, a cedar Koa prototype and the two in the picture below. The one on the left is a redwood top/walnut B&S, the one on the right is a cedar top with walnut. Both have flamed maple binding and cocobolo fretboards.

They're both fabulous, play like butter and sound fantastic! I'm a bit partial to the redwood top but the cedar one has a nice low range bass sound. I'm having a hard time deciding, I see him this weekend and he expects a decision, another customer told him whichever one I don't want she'll buy so we all win!

Hi all, just got some pics from my luthier, Ray Varona for Dammann Fine Custom Instruments, and wanted to post them up.

My aesthetic goal was to create a cohesive, unified design using visually interesting, acoustically appropriate woods, and to source them all locally, as Ralph & Ray like to do. The cherry and maple are both local, but the spruce is Sitka because Ray really felt it was a better piece than any of the more local top woods he had in stock. Only the wenge neck accent and the rosewood for the back accent & fingerboard will be "exotic" woods.

That's all for now! More for the forum when I get them. Thank you all for sharing this journey with me - I can't wait to play the final product.

Flatiron 3MW mandola

I had one which I enjoyed very much. The neck was heavy and I always broke an "A" string in trying to put it on the hook because the tailpiece didn't come off.
But the sound was great. I am sorry Weber discontinued their flatbacks.

Bflat Mandola / Octave Mandolin, 17"or 20" scale?

$

Hi all,

I own a Weber Bitterroot Octave Mandolin (22" scale, f-holes / f-shape), which I love. I write a lot of music on it but I find that for my vocal range I'm always using a capo on the 3rd or 5th frets. The problem is the OM has a very thick baseball-bat style neck and it makes playing pretty difficult as you move up the neck.

I'm considering trading in the OM for either a 17" mandola and dropping it down a whole step to Bflat (i.e. Bflat,F,C,G) or getting a 20" OM and tuning it up to Bflat.

Any thoughts on which of these would work best? I'd like to keep as similar tone as possible to the 22" OM capo-ed at the 3rd fret while gaining some playability.

Have not had a Mc as long as many others ( 8 mo.), lots of what others know is over my head. Agree a lot with Mandobart. String spacing was difficult, at first, but now is normal to the point my guitar strings feel too crowded and mandolin more. I am quite happy with my 805, which was a major investment for me. I feel for the money, it sounds good, is well made, and plays easy enough, for me. Did have problems with strings mentioned in prev' posts. Emando has a set termed Eastmans, that are heavier than what came on it. The sound and playability were improved, but the C, D & A were too tight in slots in nut and saddle, to the point the tuners were hard to turn and strings creaked and both A strings broke. Did not had another pair of A's so had to use regular guitar string, which sound thin and do not meld with others. Got a new set from Emando am replacing set this week.
