Looking for purchasing a mandocello

Hey there cafe!

It has been a while for me on here, but I was thinking about financing the Weber Gallatin F style mandocello from the mandolin store. I was just wondering if anyone had anything to tell me about it or just help me in any way! It seems like a wonderful beginner mandocello, and Weber has a great reputation. Also this will be my first financing purchase so if you have any advice on that, all is welcome. Thanks so much!

The Kawalek Workshops

Well, I was initially planning on trying to save and scrimp and plan for a trip to Scotland this coming summer to go to cittern workshop (which is still really in planning stages) but now I'm thinking something else entirely different.

Would those of you who have either attended Don Kawalek's (Luthier) workshop and/or build one of his OM kits respond to this thread with your feedback? I know I already have an instrument and two on the way, but I'm feeling there might be something especially satisfying to playing an instrument that I (mostly) build myself - seems like Don's workshop would be a great way to get my hands dirty (so to speak) in doing luthiery work and preparing myself for my eventual retirement and doing something else besides IT/Computer work.

Don, your feedback would be invaluable too - I'm thinking about attending the next workshop; it will be tight squeeze on money and time off, but to know I finish the workshop the day before my birthday and leave with a sense of accomplishment and happiness in having created, with your help, a truly one-of-a-kind instrument I think would provide me with a lifetime of joy.

Thanks all. Sorry if I wax philosophical, but to be honest, I don't want to do computer work forever, and although I'll never be a Brian Dean, Don Kawalek, Brock Fletcher or Kim Breedlove, I would enjoy doing this type of handiwork in my later days of this wonderful life.

Mine was Brian Dean #41, a gorgeous brewing themed cittern. It was either be homeless and live in the streets or be without the instrument. Hindsight being 20/20, I'd opt for being homeless :))

I just fitted a K&K internal twin pickup into my 1 year old Weber Octave - and really pleased with the sound :)
i was a little nervous before drilling out the 12mm hole - it was already about 9.5mm so just needed opening up. but i also had to open up the hole in the tailpiece to 12mm. it all worked out fine and i'm well pleased with the result :)

Ok..... Sorry guys I have a confession to make.... Uhmmmm... You know that Eastman OM that Scott had on the home page? Well somehow it is making a trip to my house:disbelief: Can't wait! Just in time to play some Christmas tunes on. This is my first OM. Anyway any recommendations on strings? I play mostly bluegrass/Celtic style music.

Thinking about following along the lines of Irvine and getting a Portuguese guitarra and string it as a long scale mando. Looking at an Apc Porto guitarra with a 430mm scale. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome

Hopefully in the process of selling my mandolin (about $5k) that I just haven't been playing (1924 F4 Gibson) and buying an octave. Stopped into Seattle to try out a couple about a month ago and was rudely shocked at the difference from mandolin...even though I was expecting some difficulty. The 22" was scary different....20" not quite so much (small hands). I'm planning on leaving the US for good this coming Spring so I figured if I was going to make the switch....cheaper here than in the UK. Out of just simplicity I was thinking about getting a Weber Gallatin 20" oval. Hopefully can buy that and still have a couple thousand left over from selling the F4. Guess if I was really paranoid I could always use that money to buy a Gallatin regular mandolin as well and I would break even on the switch. Mostly play classical but dabble at other things. The other one I tried was a Red Valley with a shorter scale....but I didn't care much for the sound, although for less than half the price it was pretty nice. No way I can really test one before buying..... any others in that price range/sound that I could get hold of on a fairly short time scale?

Local builder of inexpensive OM/Bouzoukis

At a local instrument dealer, I found a flat-top octave mandolin built by regional luthier Nils Caspersson at Orleans Dulcimers in Victor NY. It was serviceable, all solid woods, nice headstock inlay, black matte finish, no truss rod (beefy neck!), good tuners, and was selling for less than $400.

Caspersson has been building dulcimers for decades, and the occasional larger instrument. There aren't many domestic builders in that price range, so I thought I'd mention his work here. No financial interest whatsoever.

Eastwood Tenor Baritone crowd funding

Eastwood and Airline Guitars has started a new crowd funded custom shop, and one of the items up for order is a 26.25" scale length version of their 2 pup tenor guitar. Cello tuning ideal? But possibly "octave-octave-mando" tuning? Check it out at:

http://eastwoodcustoms.com/projects/...or-baritone-2/

No financial interest here, but would like to see it built (and if Santa is good to me, sitting beside my TG this spring). Looks like 6-8 people are needed to pledge $150 by the first week of 2015. Some of the other details are kinda up in the air, but being discussed in the TG forum:

http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/sh...Tenor-Baritone

Eastwood seems to be the only electric manufacturer (besides boutique independent luthiers) that is really taking an interest in 5ths tuned instruments, and judging by their release of 4 models of tenor guitar (this would be the fifth), the e-mandola, and rumors of an electric mando in 2015, it seems to be working for them. I'd like to see it continue and spread.

If anyone else wants to jump on, sound off on the TG forum thread about it.

Back and Side Wood Question

So, I have decided to pull the trigger and join the waiting list for a Lawrence Nyberg Bouzouki.

At this point I am thinking

Top: Carved
Top Wood: Engelmann
Scale Length: 24"
Sound Port
Headway Pick-up

I am currently torn about the wood for the back and sides. I have spent way more time than I should listening to the sound clips on his site, a few he sent me, and a few that cafe members have posted. But, I also know these pieces of wood play a very large part in the overall sound of the instrument.

At this point, it is between Rosewood, Koa, Maple, and Australian Blackwood. Yes this is a huge range in woods, but there are things I like about each.

Rosewood seems to be the traditional choice and it is by far my favorite combination with Engelmann of the samples I have heard from Nyberg instruments. That being said, there are not bouzouki samples of any of these other combinations that I have heard at this point.

I like the Maple as it is has a very clear / pure tone. It also pairs well with larger bodied instruments (but I have not really seen this in a bouzouki). I also like that it "muffles" some of the ringing sound and boom of the bass. I personally love my mandolin with Engelmann top and Sugar Maple back, but for a bouzouki I am not sure, as it may be too bright.

I like the sound of the Koa instruments I have heard, but think it may have too much texture to the tone for me. I also really like the color of Koa.

Australian Blackwood has the looks of Koa, but more of the sound of Rosewood, from what I have read, and I tend to appreciate the Rosewood tone more than Koa. So, I am thinking this may be the right choice, but I have not actually experienced this tone wood in any way, and am now looking for advice.

Any thoughts on this?

Has anyone played any of these combinations in a bouzouki format?

As an accompaniment instrument for a celtic group, what pairing would you choose?

Thanks

So... who is bidding on this Gibson mandocello?
